Watching

I never have enough time. For anything. Time to clean the house. Time to make dinner. Time to paint my daughters' nails. Time to take off their old nail polish. Time to have social fun with my friends. So what do I do if I don't have time for ANYTHING??? And where the heck has time gone? I have approximately 6 weeks (30 days) of teaching left this school year. My children are 2, 5 and 8 already. Summer will have come and gone and before I know it Erin will start kindergarten.

I'm not ready for that one.

One thing that I recently made time for was something that I felt was really important not to miss.  I know lots of people might think I was crazy or nerdy. A bird nerd.

There came an opportunity to watch.
And watch.
And watch.

A hummingbird built her nest and laid her eggs in the redwood tree in our backyard. At almost eye level. Josh found it as he was trimming the bottom branches of the tree and the mommy buzzed his head. Thank goodness she did or he may not have even seen the nest. It looks just like a knot in the tree branch.

My first picture of the nest was not so good. It's pretty blurry because I had a hummingbird ready to stab me in the head if I didn't leave it well enough alone. Below is a timeline (about 43 days) of progression - egg to flight.

Mama Bird 2-12-11

One egg in the nest - they typically lay two, which she did just two days later.

I spy a white jellybean.

Twins! 3-11-11

They slept this way a lot - beak to tail.

I love this one. The natural light, the sun warming their tiny bodies.
Eyes open. Curious. 3-16-11

I wondered: How would their beaks grow? How would they fit in that tiny nest?

Looking up to the nest. A different view.
Growing like weeds. 3-21-11

"Stop touching me!" "Mommmmm... his feathers are touching my feathers!"

Watchful eye in the sky.

Approximately 38 days old.  3-22-11

3-25-11

Last day together in the nest. You wouldn't believe the storms these babies endured. I would go out in the mornings, in the rain and wind and check on them, even when they were still eggs. Sometimes I even looked down, fearful that I would step on one that the storm had blown out the night before. They endured. And they stayed.

And the very next day...

...it was time to go.
